The Velvet Curtain of Ignorance

A WORD OF ADVICE BEFORE READING:

These words are a very powerful medicine, not meant to comfort, but to break through.

They will strike at the very foundation of every belief you have used to build the castle of the “Self.” If you are not ready to see that castle collapse, please put this aside.

The Velvet Curtain of Ignorance: The Silent Cry Amidst the Three Realities

O you who are asleep upon the soft bed of your own prejudices, intoxicated by the wine of the “I” and by temporary achievements.

You are reading these words not with the eyes of a scholar, but with the bare heart of a condemned prisoner who does not know the day of his own execution.

The curtain of ignorance that you have woven yourself, thread by thread, with false hopes and cowardly denial, is about to be torn apart.

And what lies behind it will be the purest form of terror.

This is the cold water upon the face that you should have received from the very moment you were born.

IMPERMANENCE (Anicca) – The Magnificent Funeral Chariot Called “Life”

You look into the mirror and see a familiar face.

A deception!

What you are seeing is a body undergoing a slow process of decay.

Every second, every moment, millions of cells within you are struggling, fading away, and being replaced.

The blood that you believe belongs to you is merely a temporary river carrying borrowed materials, which will one day be returned to the dust.

The smooth skin you caress today is the burial garment of the skeleton that awaits tomorrow.

You love someone?

What is that love, other than a desperate attachment to a collection of atoms moving toward dissolution?

The smile you engraved deeply into your heart, the hair you long for, the arms you embrace tightly...

All of it is already decaying before your very eyes, even within the very memories that are themselves fading away.

Every promise of eternity is a cruel laughter of the universe before the ignorance of a moth flying toward the flame.

Look outside.

The civilization you are so proud of, the skyscrapers, the mighty empires.

What are they?

They are nothing more than slightly more refined castles of sand, waiting for the tide of time to arrive and flatten them.

All knowledge, all art, all heritage...

will eventually be crushed into silence.

The sun will one day burn out.

The galaxies will one day collide.

This entire universe is a mad dance of arising and passing away, and your existence is merely a meaningless speck of dust passing briefly through the storm.

Impermanence does not simply mean:

“Everything will change eventually.”

That is merely a softened expression for those who are unwilling to face reality.

Impermanence means:

EVERYTHING IS PASSING AWAY, RIGHT NOW.

There is nothing that is truly “existing.”

There is only that which is “in the process of disappearing.”

You are not truly living.

You are a process of dying that is continuously unfolding.

SUFFERING (Dukkha) – The Unsatisfying Breath of the Exiled One

Do you think suffering is accident, illness, separation, or loss?

Those are only the most obvious expressions, visible to those with shallow understanding.

The true nature of suffering, the subtle suffering (Saṅkhāra-dukkha), permeates every breath, every heartbeat of yours.

It is the fundamental pressure of existence itself.

Every pleasure you obtain carries within it the seed of future suffering.

When you possess what you love, you begin to tremble at the thought of losing it.

When you achieve success, you become buried under the pressure of maintaining it and the fear of failure.

Even in the happiest moment, an undercurrent of insecurity quietly flows beneath, because you know that it will not last.

Your happiness is merely a brief pause between two waves of pain, a temporary loosening of the rope that binds you.

You are a bottomless vessel, an eternal thirst that can never be completely satisfied.

Every desire that you fulfill only reveals another desire — deeper and greater.

You chase wealth, status, love, knowledge...

like a donkey chasing the carrot hanging before its eyes.

You never truly arrive at the destination.

There is only exhaustion and collapse upon an endless road.

Your existence, by its very nature, is friction, a constant state of dissatisfaction.

Like a wheel that is misaligned, every rotation creates an uncomfortable shaking.

That is Dukkha.

It is not an event that happens within your life.

It is the very structure of your life.

NOT-SELF (Anattā) – The Empty Temple and the Ghost That Calls Itself “I”

This is the final sword, the sword that cuts directly into the heart of illusion.

And it is also the most terrifying truth.

The “I” that you cherish, protect, and spend your entire life constructing...

does not exist.

Try to find it.

Where is it?

Inside the brain?

The brain is merely a biochemical mass, a complex machine processing information.

Inside the heart?

It is only a muscle that pumps blood.

Inside memory?

Memory is merely unreliable chemical impressions, constantly changing and fading.

Inside emotions?

Emotions are only temporary biochemical reactions responding to conditions.

What you call “I,” “soul,” or “self” is actually only a collection of the five aggregates (Pañcakkhandha):

Rūpa (Form — the physical body)
Vedanā (Feeling — sensations and experiences)
Saññā (Perception — recognition and labeling)
Saṅkhāra (Mental formations — intentions, thoughts, and conditioning)
Viññāṇa (Consciousness — awareness)

They are like the parts of a chariot.

When assembled together, we call it a “chariot.”

But when each part is taken apart, where is the “chariot”?

It is only a name, an empty concept.

You are not the controller.

There is no one inside.

This temple of the body is completely empty.

What you call “I” is merely an illusion created by the continuous interaction of ownerless psycho-physical processes.

It is a self-created story, a stream of successive moments flowing one after another, without any permanent entity standing behind them to experience them.

When you say:

“I think,”

it is only a thought that has arisen.

When you say:

“I am sad,”

it is only a feeling of sadness that has arisen.

There is no “I” possessing these things.

You are only a puppet moved by causes and conditions, a ghost deceiving itself about its own existence inside a house without an owner.

The Ultimate Terror

Now, put them together.

You are an endless process of dissolution (Anicca),

driven by an inherent unsatisfactoriness (Dukkha),

and completely without any permanent subject experiencing it (Anattā).

In other words:

An empty ghost, enduring endless dissatisfaction, while continuously fading away.

That is the true portrait of what you call “yourself.”

Not a noble eternal being.

Not a child of a Creator.

Not an immortal spiritual entity.

You are an illusion woven by ignorance (Avijjā), colored by suffering (Dukkha), and empty by its very nature of Not-Self (Anattā).

Every effort of your life, every love, every hatred, every achievement, every failure...

are merely meaningless waves appearing on the surface of an empty ocean.

This truth is not given for you merely to contemplate.

It is meant to shake you awake.

Feel it.

Feel the ground collapsing beneath your feet.

Feel the overwhelming dizziness when realizing that what you have always called “yourself” was never a permanent entity.

Feel the absolute loneliness when realizing that there is no fixed “someone” here waiting to be saved.

This fear that makes your hair stand, this deep trembling before reality...

is the first spark of Wisdom.

It is the sign that the curtain of ignorance has begun to tear.

Most people will quickly try to repair that curtain with comforting religious beliefs, with optimistic philosophies built upon denial, or by throwing themselves into work and entertainment to forget.

But you?

What will you do with the silent scream that has just echoed from the abyss within yourself?

Will you run away?

Or will you have the courage to look directly into it?

Because only when one dares to face this profound truth does the path to liberation truly begin to reveal itself.
