The Nikāyas are the collections of discourses preserved in the Theravāda Buddhist tradition, also known as the Early Buddhist Scriptures. They contain the teachings delivered by the Buddha throughout His forty-five years of teaching, including the fundamental doctrines such as the Four Noble Truths, Dependent Origination (Paṭiccasamuppāda), Non-self (Anattā), and the Noble Eightfold Path. Buddhist scholars and historians generally regard the Early Buddhist Canon as the most reliable and the closest available record for determining what the Buddha taught.
